Blogging the Beach

During the height of the summer season the Outer Banks are more alive than ever! There’s nothing like spending the early morning on the beach with a relaxing stroll along the shore, or a lively game of volleyball or cornhole while the wild mustang play in the nearby dunes. We like to think this is a great time to come visit because it marks a time when most people have finished their vacations, leaving plenty of beach vacation rentals available. August is a great time to gather everyone for a week-long family reunion in a multi-room beach cottage, or one last weekend getaway with the kids before school starts.

Wednesdays through August, you can stop by the Whalehead club from 3-7 PM for Wednesday Wine tastings. For a $20 fee you can taste the best whites and red and enjoy live music as the sun sets. If you have a taste for something sweet, consider a visit to Martin Vineyards on Knott’s Island, where the peach orchard may have some choice fruits available for picking. Be sure to call ahead for availability.

If you think you have what it takes to build the best sand castle in the Outer Banks or out-kayak the competition, you’ll want to try your luck at the Ocean Games, sponsored by Kitty Hawk Kites (with locations in Currituck and Nags Head). The fun starts early on August 8 and registration is free.

The July 4th weekend promises lots of great entertainment in Currituck County as two stars in Country Music bring back-to-back days of outstanding music and performance to the local stage.
Jason Michael Carroll kicks off the weekend performances on July 3rd, taking the stage at the Weeping Radish in Jarvisburg. Carroll with his traditional country music sound and rich baritone voice, will be performing from 4:00 until 10:00 p.m.

The 17th annual July 4th Whalehead Club fireworks display just got even more spectacular as country music star Stephen Cochran, a decorated Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, brings his unique sound and arrangements to Currituck County Heritage Park.
The holiday celebration will be held on the grounds of the fabled Whalehead Club in Corolla.
A celebration of all that is best in America, the day is filled with good food, games for the kids and something for every member of the family. Activities begin at 5:00 p.m. Stephen Cochran will take the stage at 7:30, with fireworks beginning at dusk.
Admission to the event is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit Thanks USA, a non-profit organization that provides post-secondary, need-based educational scholarships to children and spouses of active-duty U.S. military personnel.

The Whalehead Club at Currituck Heritage Park Presents the 8th Annual “Under the Oaks” Art Festival

Enjoy this annual outdoor art show on the grounds of Currituck Heritage Park with over 100 quality artists showcasing a wide variety of media, musical entertainment, food concessions, art auction, and children’s activities.
