Wrangler Farms Fall Family Festival

The 2nd Annual Fall Festival will be held at Wrangler Farms in Grandy this October. This year instead of holding the festival every weekend in October, it will be consolidated into one long festival weekend, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday October 9, 10, and 11. The event will be held from 10 AM to 4 PM each day.

The festival will have an autumn, rural heritage theme. There will be horse drawn hayrides to the pumpkin patch, pony rides, farm tours, games, food and educational talks on the Corolla Wild Horses (North Carolina’s State Horse), several of which were adopted by and reside at Wrangler Farms.  Admission is free, but there is a fee for certain activities offered throughout the farm, such as the hayrides.  Stop by the Currituck Outer Banks table and sign up for a chance to win a beach prize pack!

Currituck Outer Banks in the news

The Currituck Outer Banks has enjoyed quite a bit of press in recent days! The Daily Advance reports on a recent exhibit of photos chronicling the history of Long Point:

More than 200 residents and history enthusiasts filed into Currituck Middle School last June for an event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the building of the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal.

The event was such a success that Barbara Snowden, Currituck’s official historian, and the Currituck County Historical Society have arranged a display of 19th century “then and now” images of Long Point Island at Currituck Public Library in Barco.

Also, the Piedmont Review highlights a nice article on the region’s two best attractions: the wild horses and the wine.

Rows of corn stand alongside Cabernet vines, and migratory snow geese nestle among the Sangiovese, part of the acres of grapes in Sanctuary, home to an amazing assemblage: Syrah, Tempranillo, Viognier, Norton and the classic Muscadine. These grapes, according to Wright, ripen in the intense summer heat, tempered by cooling ocean breezes. The ancient sand dunes provide drainage and unique flavor to the fruit.

Currituck Supports the Special Olympics

If you are in the Outer Banks this week, we hope you’ll come out to support the Currituck Fraternal Order of Police in tomorrow’s Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. On August 18, starting at noon, members of Police Lodge 89 will take to the shore at the North Beach Ramp. Several athletes from the Special Olympics will also participate in the event, which preserves the flame for the next event. Donations to benefit the Special Olympics will be collected.

If you are unable to join us, you can still support our Lodge and this great organization. Make checks payable to SONC (Special Olympics of North Carolina) and send to:

Best Bets for August in the Outer Banks

During the height of the summer season the Outer Banks are more alive than ever! There’s nothing like spending the early morning on the beach with a relaxing stroll along the shore, or a lively game of volleyball or cornhole while the wild mustang play in the nearby dunes. We like to think this is a great time to come visit because it marks a time when most people have finished their vacations, leaving plenty of beach vacation rentals available. August is a great time to gather everyone for a week-long family reunion in a multi-room beach cottage, or one last weekend getaway with the kids before school starts.

Wednesdays through August, you can stop by the Whalehead club from 3-7 PM for Wednesday Wine tastings. For a $20 fee you can taste the best whites and red and enjoy live music as the sun sets. If you have a taste for something sweet, consider a visit to Martin Vineyards on Knott’s Island, where the peach orchard may have some choice fruits available for picking. Be sure to call ahead for availability.

If you think you have what it takes to build the best sand castle in the Outer Banks or out-kayak the competition, you’ll want to try your luck at the Ocean Games, sponsored by Kitty Hawk Kites (with locations in Currituck and Nags Head). The fun starts early on August 8 and registration is free.

For more fun family-oriented Outer Banks events, be sure to visit our online calendar for new additions and schedule changes. Don’t let August pass by without a visit – school is right around the corner!
